What is a Torn Meniscus? The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage located in the knee joint that acts as a cushion between the thighbone and shinbone. A torn meniscus is one of the most common knee injuries , especially among athletes or individuals involved in activities that require sudden twisting or pivoting. Even simple movements, like kneeling or squatting, can lead to a tear in older adults due to cartilage degeneration. When the meniscus tears, it can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, and limited knee motion. Some patients describe a "popping" sound at the time of injury, followed by difficulty in moving or locking of the knee. Causes of Meniscus Tear A meniscus tear usually occurs during activities that cause forceful twisting or rotation of the knee. Sports like football, tennis, or basketball pose a higher risk.
